American Jazz Museum Executive Director Cheptoo Kositany-Buckner Joins the Board at Folk Alliance International

(Kansas City, Mo.) The American Jazz Museum (AJM) is proud to announce that Cheptoo Kositany-Buckner has been elected to the Board of Directors for the Folk Alliance International (FAI)! FAI is a twenty-nine year old charitable organization based in Kansas City, Missouri, with global members and regional affiliates. The FAI produces an International Awards Show, a Music Camp, the Kansas City Folk Festival, and the world’s largest conference for the folk music industry that draws 2,500 registrants from almost 20 countries. The mission of the FAI is to nurture, engage, and empower the international folk music community - traditional and contemporary, amateur and professional - through education, advocacy and performance.

Cheptoo has been the Executive Director of the American Jazz Museum since March 2016. Previously, she was the Deputy Director of the Kansas City Public Library for twenty-five years leading major organizational initiatives at local and international levels. Since taking the lead at the AJM, she has initiated several key programs such as the Kansas City Jazz Academy, the Kansas City Jazz and Heritage Festival, which will take place Memorial Day weekend 2017, and she has led her staff in the development of several key exhibits showcasing music and African American art and artists. The AJM’s next exhibit, Spectrum: Autism, Art and Music, will run from January 14, 2017, to April 30, 2017.

Folk Alliance International Executive Director, Aengus Finnan, welcomes Cheptoo to its board as they continue to diversify and internationalize programs and services. Ballots from this year’s voting membership were sent to FAI from November 8 - December 8th, 2016. Five directors were elected to serve three year terms beginning February 16, 2017.  Ms. Kositany is thrilled to be part of FAI’s organization and mission. In response to the election, she released this statement.

I look forward to elevating music-related initiatives in the Kansas City metropolitan area and beyond, and it is wonderful to now join Folk Alliance International’s Board of Directors to develop a very robust, diverse, and integrated music scene. I am very excited to receive this news!
