Position Title: Jazz Studies Associate

Reports to: Director of Jazz Studies

Job Description

This position supports the American Jazz Museum’s Jazz Studies Department through the implementation of programs and execution of event logistics, including the Kansas City Jazz Academy, Speaker Series, and other departmental initiatives.

Essential Job Functions

  • Public Program Implementation (30%) –  Communicate stage plot and set-up needs to event logistics staff, ensure set-ups are accurate and functional. Record and report event attendance. Assist in producing program descriptions.
  • Kansas City Jazz Academy (40%) – act as site manager to oversee Saturday operations and logistics including checking in/out equipment inventory, tracking student and staff attendance and punctuality, tracking student outreach participation, organizing music library and student folders.
  • Special Projects (30%) – KCPS Summer Program and other projects as directed by Director of Jazz Studies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz Studies, Music, History or other relevant arts and humanities discipline or equivalent work experience

  • Must be able to work independently and to lead, train and motivate others

  • Proficiency in Google apps (Docs, Sheets, etc.)

  • Ability to accommodate a flexible schedule, as well as being able to perform in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment

  • Ability to work with the public and possess conflict resolution skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including formatting, editing and proofreading

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong background in jazz pedagogy – able to demonstrate skills within various instrumental roles, strong keyboard or guitar ability, able to diagnose student needs and communicate appropriate content with an eye toward student learning style

  • Demonstrable experience with Finale music notation software
