Retail Manager



The American Jazz Museum in Kansas City seeks a dynamic, creative, and energetic professional to oversee our retail store. Reporting to the Director of Finance & Operations, this position manages the day-to-day operations of the on-site museum store and webstore, which includes sales, visual merchandising, and the hiring/training/ development of the retail team. In collaboration with the Director of Finance & Operations, the Retail Manager aids in the planning, organization, and execution of the retail team’s responsibilities while leading a productive and collaborative work environment.

Work hours can include weekends, holidays, evenings and encompass managing and staffing store events, pop-up shops, offsite events and projects. This is a full-time exempt position.


  • Provide a welcoming experience to AJM visitors.
  • Lead a staff of direct reports by leading the retail team in customer service excellence, proactively resolving conflicts, scheduling needs, supervising, and coaching the retail team, assisting with curbside service and ecommerce fulfilment as needed
  • Work with Director of Finance & Operations to develop, monitor, and manage an annual work plan, sales goals, and budget
  • Assist guests with purchasing admission tickets & memberships through the retail store POS
  • Identify areas for business growth; develop and execute action plans
  • Establish and maintain sales and operations policies and procedures
  • Schedule staff coverage based on the needs of the business and productivity
  • Work with coaching, monitoring, and appraising retail staff to provide first-class retail services to visitors while encouraging enthusiasm for and knowledge about exhibitions and items in the collection
  • Follow inventory management guidelines (shipping, receiving, invoicing, physical counts, damages, etc.)
  • Develop vendor relationships, negotiate terms, discounts, exclusivity, etc.
  • Collaborates with colleagues to generate sales and implement targeted events through membership, facility rentals, private group tours, programs, etc.
  • Develops and maintains Online Store presence, functionality, product availability and sales tracking vs. inventory on hand
  • Represent Shop as needed to the public, media, and retail community
  • Communicate relevant Shop information to staff and internal audiences


  • Two or more years of proven retail managerial experience, including direct reports, sales/customer development and back office operations.
  • Merchandising, inventory management and staff supervisory experience required
  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal and communications skills, including experience with and comfort in interacting with the public
  • Must be highly detail-oriented with strong organization, time management, and project management skills, including the ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines
  • Flexibility to work evenings, holidays, and weekends
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Experience with point-of-sale and inventory management software
  • Extensive cash handling, customer service, and loss prevention experience
  • Photography and graphic design experience a plus
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time (2+ hours) and lift/push/pull up to 40 lbs.
  • Prior museum experience a plus
